With nearly 23 years of experience in the education sector, Craig McCalla now serves as the principal of Anchor Elementary School in Dexter, Michigan. He has been recognized as Michigan’s Outstanding Practicing Principal in 2017 and by the National Association of Elementary School Principals as a National Distinguished Principal.
Craig is also a strong supporter of dignity and freedom for transgender students. He understands that caring for the Young Five through Second Grade students in his school requires that he treat all people with respect – that’s why when a student came out as transgender, Craig set out to educate himself on the best ways to support the unique needs of the student, working alongside the parents and resources from experts. Since then, he has facilitated all-staff training on the importance of supporting LGBTQ young people, and he is a founding member of the Transgender Task Force, a local coalition that helps schools in the area answer questions about name changes, student records, and more.
“I’m not doing anything that any other principal shouldn’t do,” Craig said. “We need to advocate for all families and for all kids – that’s my job. I love talking to other administrators about supporting transgender students, because the reality is that with just a few tweaks in schools, everyone feels safer and included. And that’s good for everyone.”
