Helena Bushong
Chicago, IL

Helena Bushong is a black, transgender woman living with HIV who is a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ community. Although at times she has suffered from depression, Helena feels it is important to tell her story in order to inspire others to continue their own activism and live as their true authentic selves. Most of Helena’s work is focused on advocacy for LGBTQ people living with HIV/AIDS, particularly the senior population, and she is involved in several advocacy groups.

“It’s time for people to become informed and get engaged in the process of developing laws and raising consciousness of our present needs as older citizens, for those of us who are here now as well as those who are coming,” she said.
