James Credle is an openly gay black man, a highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, and a former dean of students at Rutgers University-Newark. Credle is also a proud community builder, and a longtime activist in the Vietnam Veterans and LGBTQ movements. In his life, James has not only confronted homophobia head on, but racism as well, and he has worked to create spaces that are safe, open, and welcoming for LGBTQ people and people of color.
“Our lives have been devalued by certain people for so long,” James said during his OUTWORDS interview. “We have so much further to go as a nation.”
