Joey Seymour is an openly gay man serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve, married to his husband David and raising a son, Caleb. While Joey is proud to be serving his country, he says it can be difficult to be away from his family, especially as his son continues to grow up. Even so, he is happy that Caleb takes pride in the fact that his father is a soldier, and with David, he knows he can continue to serve his country and be a role model for other LGBTQ people.
“The constant theme for myself and other fathers serving in the military is that we do it for pride in country, but we also do it for pride from our children,” Joey said. “As he grows older, my hope is that Caleb’s pride in my serving our country only grows and his respect for David, who serves alongside me as a military spouse, is just as strong.”
