Kassi Willingham and Katie Sloane were married in February of 2018 and hoped to have a reception in their hometown of Jackson at a later date to celebrate with friends and family. However, they were turned away from their prospective venue because they are a same-sex couple. Both women are aware that because there are no explicit statewide protections for LGBTQ people in Wyoming. As a result, they remained vulnerable to being refused service simply because of who they are.
“We don’t have any legal rights,” Kassi explained. “It hurt because I wondered how many people around us think that what we’re doing is wrong. I wanted our wedding planning experience to be positive.”
