Leslie Gray is a retired tattoo artist from Olympia, Washington and is a Native American and transgender woman – that is, she was born male but long understood that that didn’t quite fit. Born in 1955, she struggled growing up in Texas as a gender nonconforming individual and in her 50s, she transitioned and now lives as the woman she has long known herself to be. As someone who works in an expressive field, Leslie understands that she must serve all members of the public, regardless of who they are or if she shares their beliefs.
“Being open for business means being open to the public – all of the public, not just those you pick and choose,” Leslie said. “I have to respect whatever people choose to believe. I always did the best I could for everyone I could.”
