Luke, a college student in North Dakota, found a great basement apartment after deciding living off-campus would be less expensive than on-campus housing. However, shortly after he moved in, his landlord learned that Luke is gay and told Luke that if he ever had gay friends over, he would be immediately evicted. At one point, the landlord openly floated the idea of raising his rent if he didn’t “change” his sexual orientation. In order to escape further harassment, Luke moved onto campus, incurring a huge expense.
“People have the right to feel secure,” Luke said. “As someone who works to pay his bills, I should feel secure living somewhere that I pay rent. I shouldn’t feel like I need to alter myself to live somewhere.”
