Professional golfer Maya Reddy, who golfed for years as part of Claremont Mudd Scripps Athletics, is fighting for greater inclusivity in the golfing world. Her stories of facing discrimination in the sport – including exclusion based on her race and her sexual orientation as a queer woman – run parallel to so many of the stories that we see each year of LGBTQ people who experience discrimination in places without explicit laws to protect them. Now, as she serves as an Athlete Ally ambassador to strengthen LGBTQ visibility in the sporting world. Maya is also pursuing a law degree.
“Athlete Ally has helped me realize there are concrete measures that can be taken to change the harmful exclusive nature of golf, and that to create the change I want to see, that would have helped me belong in golf, fighting for policy change is important,” Maya said. “I am honored and empowered to be working with Athlete Ally as an ambassador to fight for inclusive policies in my sport, and in all sports.”
