Queen and Terrance live in North Carolina, where there are no explicit statewide nondiscrimination protections. Queen is a transgender woman – she was raised male but knew from a young age that that didn’t fit, so she transitioned and now lives every day as the woman she’s long known herself to be. Years ago Queen was renting an apartment from a landlord who she thought she had a good relationship with. However, when he came to fix a leak, the landlord saw her rainbow and equality stickers and began asking her about them.
Two weeks later, he told Queen he was selling the property and she would have to move. Later, Queen found out the apartment was rented out to another tenant immediately after she left, and the landlord just wanted her gone because she is transgender. “Having so many doors closed makes you want to give up on yourself,” Queen said.
