Sabina Mendoza
Provo, UT

Sabina Mendoza was born in Utah, but her family left the state soon afterward. She returned at the age of 18 to attend college at Brigham Young University, but was concerned that without statewide nondiscrimination protections, she may not be able to remain in the state and still be open about her identity as a lesbian.

“People might think I’m not as ‘Utahn’ as them, but I love this state, I love the mountains, I love everything it has to offer,” she said. “But if I could be kicked out of my house or fired from my job, that doesn’t leave me much opportunity to be open about myself and live like I want to.”
