Sarah Huckman is a transgender girl, meaning that while she was born male, she had a deep understanding of herself to be female from a young age. When she told her parents, Jen and Tom, there was no question in their minds that they would love, accept, and support her. Sarah officially came out as transgender to her classmates, teachers, and school administrators after Thanksgiving break in seventh grade, and she transitioned to live every day as the girl she has long known herself to be.
Sarah is also a talented athlete who competes for both her school’s track and cross country teams. Now, because there are statewide nondiscrimination protections across New Hampshire, Sarah is able to compete in the girls’ division of her sport without her ability being questioned. “Most of the kids know what’s going on, that I’m transgender, and all of the kids and coaches have been very supportive,” she said.
